Vaccine worries after care home residents test positive

Over a dozen elderly residents at a German care home have tested positive for coronavirus despite receiving two doses of the Pfizer vaccine.The alarm was sounded after a single patient came back positive as part of the care home's regular testing regimen.

The original patient passed on the virus, a particularly infectious strain first detected in the UK, to 13 other residents. While all positive cases were either asymptomatic or mild, the latest development poses an uncomfortable issue for vaccine developers.Residents who returned positive tests received their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine "as late as January 25".Eugen Brysch, a representative for the German Foundation for Patient Protection, said the government must increase testing in care homes to account for the different strains appearing around the world.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that vaccinated people are not immune to the coronavirus and can pass it on,” Brysch said via The Local. “But vaccination can still be helpful in preventing an outbreak of the disease.

This doesn't have to be a scary scenario – we will have to live with the virus."Authorities were quick to place the Belm care home under strict quarantine, with residents being refused access to the public despite returning negative tests.

All care home workers were forbidden to interact with anyone and are only allowed to leave their residences to get to work.
