My understanding is that animals such as bats carry many virus. The virus finds itself in another host and then another. It has not mutated but travelled a very complicated route.
Covid19 is 80% related to the SARS.
The virus itself does not change in the transmission. If that were the case it could change on a human to human transmission. If that were to happen it would be impossible to treat or to make a vaccine.
