It was ever thus - every automotive innovation starts at the top end. ABS, DSC, in car sat nav, lane detection, radar cruise and auto braking - all started out in BMW 5 Series and Merc S classes.
It doesn't take long for it to filter down now though - look at how many "regular" cars have radar cruise control installed. My 4 year old BMW is out specced (at least in the safety systems and electronics) by Hyundais now.
