I think the preference is based on a concern that WCL are perhaps in a weak position as far as being able to establish a strong negotiating position at the table should BG decide they will want control of the resource. BG are farmed in 50% of WCLs best assets which leaves little doubt there are other potential suitors for WCL.
You might sight some other examples of where companies have had their farmin % bought out, such as AOE/BPT and BG/AJL, but both BPT and AJL have significant other core businesses. The fact that other companies wanted more reserves was a strong point though and should not be lost.
Whether Westside could get fair value for their resource is a big question.
