If you have the right drilling mud designed to have the right density so that the weight of the mud in the hole is greater than the pressure of the gas encountered then you wont see any free gas escaping, Normally you adjust the mud density by adding barite..
If you don't do this correctly you risk having a blowout which is to be avoided at all cost, so no folks the result is not like in the olden times wild west days.
When the hole is logged the gas can be detected, and then the last stage is to have a flow test, usually one interval at a time.
So in summary all is as expected, forget about the nervous nellies.
