Christie to detail Hauraki field’s modern quest

The immense value of the Hauraki goldfield of the North Island will be outlined to delegates at next month’s Gold17 Conference at Rotorua.

One of New Zealand’s most knowledgeable mineral scientists, Dr Tony Christie of GNS Science, will present a paper on the opening day of the three day international conference which begins on February 21.

In a précis of what his presentation will contain Dr Christie said the known 50 odd volcanic-related epithermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki goldfield have collectively produced more than 12 million ounces of gold, of which 7 M oz came from the Martha mine at Waihi.

He said the deposits exhibit a wide variety of styles of mineralisation in terms of their host rocks and hydrothermal alteration, and the size, number, geometry, texture and mineralogy of their veins.

From the 1990s, digital regional data sets have enabled GIS-based regional targeting of prospective areas.

Immediately after the conference Tony Christie and Stuart Simmons will manage a three day field trip of the Taupo Volcanic Belt and the Hauraki goldfield, taking in OceanaGold Corporation’s (TSX & ASX: OGC) Waihi mining operations."
