Poverty of spirit ... Stanislas Kanengele-Yondjo sentenced to nine years' jail for deliberately infecting two women with HIV. Picture: Channel 9 A MAN who knowingly infected two female tourists with HIV has been sentenced to at least nine years' jail.
Stanislas Kanengele-Yondjo, 42, was described by a judge as having "a poverty of spirit and moral bankruptcy which beggars belief" for his deliberate actions. Kanengele-Yondjo had pleaded guilty to two counts of causing grievous bodily harm by knowingly infecting two people with the HIV virus in Sydney between January and March 2003.
African-born Kanengele-Yondjo, from Blacktown in Sydney's west, had unprotected sex with the two women - one from Ireland and one from Germany - and did not tell either of them he was HIV positive.
Both women have since been diagnosed as HIV positive.
The married father of five, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was diagnosed with HIV in February 1999.
Advertisement: [Blocked Ads]He told the women he had no sexually transmitted diseases. During sentencing today in the NSW District Court, acting Judge Warwick Andrews said Kanengele-Yondjo's acts were heinous and callous and showed a total disregard for fellow human beings.
"To have subjected innocent persons to your own horror shows a poverty of spirit and moral bankruptcy which beggars belief," Judge Andrews said.
Sentencing Kanengele-Yondjo to six years with a non-parole period of four and a half years for each count, Judge Andrews said he took into account that he had shown some remorse and contrition for his actions.
Kanengele-Yondjo will serve the sentences cumulatively, meaning that with time already served, he will be eligible for parole in April 2013.
Judge Andrews said the sentence had to reflect the "appalling suffering" Kanengele-Yondjo's crimes had inflicted on the victims.
He said doctors estimate Kanengele-Yondjo will live for at least another 10 years, perhaps as long as 20.
A spokeswoman for the victims, Rose Bay detective Bernadette Ingrim, said the women were relieved the matter was finally over.
"They appreciate that at least for the next nine or 12 years he won't have the opportunity to hurt anyone else like this again," Ms Ingrim said.
She said the victims were pleased with the length of the sentence.
"We think that's a genuine reflection of the offence," she said
