Abiomed Inc. -- perhaps best known for developing an artificial heart -- has inked a strategic alliance with a California company that will give it the ability to sell its products. Danvers, Mass.-based Abiomed's (Nasdaq: ABMD - News) agreement with WorldHeart Corp. in Oakland requires it to give World Heart a $5 million loan and provide some marketing and clinical support. In return, Abiomed receives a warrant for 3.4 million common shares of WorldHeart and gains the right of first refusal to serve as an exclusive global distributor for future WorldHeart Products. Abiomed also gains the right to designate a nominee or an observe to WorldHeart's board of directors.
