Dr Esmore was on channel 7 this evening, he looked and sounded very pleased, he expanded the conversation to how much development and testing had gone into the pump design to ensure it was trouble free. They did say the patient was 70 years of age, very ill, and was not a candidate for a full transplant, but Dr Esmore seemed very enthusiastic about the prospects for the heart pump. If it works, ownership of VCR will be the equivalent of having the rights to print your own hundred dollar notes, the nearest US equivalent is far from the fully developed stage of a third generation pump this device is now at. Blood clotting has always been a significant problem with heart pumps, Ventracor are saying it is not an issue with their single moving part in the pump, and no, or few anti coagulants are needed for the patients. Live animal testing last year bore out this claim the company has been making. One would guess that some time down the road the medicos at the Alfred hospital in Melbourne will have statement on this matter too. In the meanwhile, the hope lies in this device being able to improve the lives of sick people more readily than waiting in impossible queues for a full heart transplant with all of its attendant problems. There is just is not enough donors to fill the need and it is a global problem.
