Anyway
I saw a fantastic program on Foxtel (CNBC) regarding heart disease -
It mentioned that congestive heart failure - the progressive weakening of the heart and consequently its pumping actions is a major problem throughout the world.
Typically, to compensate for this weakness the heart will enlarge and pump faster, compounding the weakness. The program mentioned that plenty of research is being conducted into a long term or curative treatments beside full organ transplantation.
In particular short-term treatments such as devices, stents and pharmacological preparations were discussed.
One of the key trends emerging to drive growth in the cardiovascular device market is the take-up of new devices for heart failure, particularly LVADs. Originally developed to bridge patients to transplantation, increasing experience is indicating that they may be an effective bridge to cardiac recovery or as a long-term alternative to organ transplantation.
