Son of Sam laws refer to criminal profiting from crime for example writing books or appearing in TV programs. In the USA many of the so called "Son of Sam" laws are different for different states. In some states the law is only directed at the convicted / defendant. In other states 'family' members are covered which would include a spouse, gf, live- in- lover etc. The idea is that the 'family' member may not stash the proceeds of the book, and later on release the perpetrator of the crime would benefit. Many states have laws that direct the proceeds of such post-hoc endeavours to the victims and their families.
