Euro 6 is the new standard pretty much across the world. UK, Europe, Japan, USA all are demanding at least Euro 6 standard. We are lagging behind and without a vehicle manufacturing base we have no option other than to import compliant vehicles.
Yes we are a dumping ground for older Euro 5 vehicles as the rest of the world are mandated to Euro 6 only.
So you can bitch and moan as much as you like but very shortly no vehicle manufacturer is ever going to produce Euro 5 simply for Australia.

More than half of new petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles on sale in Australia are only certified to the minimum emissions standard, Euro 5 – including fuel-efficient models such as the Toyota Corolla hybrid. Also among them are most versions of Australia's top-selling utes – the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and more – as well as four-wheel-drives such as the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and Jeep Wrangler. While many of these vehicles are available in Euro 6-compliant variants overseas – which could be brought here to easily meet the mandates.
