Well son it is not much to do with owing anything to AGM management. It is a question of politeness to shareholders. Some people have other things to do with their lives than sitting around all day watching their screens to see if ZFX extends their bid at 3:59 today, or not.

Most other instances I have observed, the bidding company has made a pretty clear statement two or three days before the offer closes, that it definitely is closing or alternatively will be extended.
