Could they just "create money" before 1970? wasn't the US dollar on the Gold Standard til then?

I am becoming very cynical in my old age, don't know what to believe anymore.

Very scary if true, even with Gold the future looks bleak, I mean if you have Gold, then you will have to find a way to HANG on to it, know one will defend it for you.
