STUDENTS will be allowed to make Christmas decorations, sing carols and learn about Jesus but won’t sing hymns or display a crucifix under new state school religion rules.
The Andrews Government yesterday released new guidelines for special religious instruction in state schools, clarifying what would and would not be allowed in class after scuppering the controversial program.
Teachers will make provisions in class for students to learn about “global cultures, ethics, traditions and faiths and to build strong and respectful relationships”.
This includes allowing students to dress up for Diwali, bring sweets for Eid, put up a Menorah at Hanukkah and learn generally about religions.
Under the changes, teachers will be allowed to have a person of faith speak to students, if it is in an educational context, and they are not trying to convert students.
Principals have been issued with a list of scenarios to ensure they understand the difference between an SRI and non-SRI activity.
