Victoria says no to nukes
November 21, 2006
VICTORIAN Premier Steve Bracks has pledged to strengthen the state's anti-nuclear power stance if he is re-elected on Saturday.
Mr Bracks' comments come as the Federal Government is about to release its report on nuclear power in Australia.
Mr Bracks said he would introduce a requirement for a plebiscite on nuclear power to support existing laws damning its use in Victoria.
"We will if re-elected ensure that there is a plebiscite in the future so that the laws will be backed up requiring a vote of a Victorian public for that to occur," Mr Bracks said.
"We are very strong on this. We don't believe the nuclear way is the way to go."
Mr Bracks challenged the Liberals to say whether or not they would accept any Federal Government push to establish a nuclear energy industry.
