Cooking with gas
23 July 2010
Ceramic Fuel Cells says it has received the imprimatur of the CSIRO for the potential emissions savings of its home- and office-based generation units. According to Ceramic, a CSIRO analysis says the stand-alone gas-fired generators can achieve significant carbon savings, particularly when replacing the brown coal generation that features in Victoria. The study says the average household in Victoria produces around 10.7 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year from energy used in the home, but the BlueGen units could potentially offset three times that amount if used at capacity. It notes that a 2 kilowatt solar panel using the grid as a back-up can save just 3.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
