I read somewhere that Musk (or his people) have built into their product plan downloadable software upgrades (and an app store) as an important part of their EV car revenue stream. EV cars will be connected to the internet - and through the screen users can BUY upgrades. - Sports package (want to go faster and have better handling? - a software upgrade BUY NOW.) - Automonous driving - an upgrade - Faster charging - an upgrade
And added value services... - Tesla electric power at bulk rates - Servicing - Parking etc.
So the car becomes a platform for marketing added value features and services.
