Current European car design parameters have radically changed over 30 years.
Today the hierarchy of European design variables are:
-fuel economy
-clean exhaust emissions
-dynamic safety
-etc
-durability which is a reasonable quality determinant is away down the scale unlike what it was 20 years ago.
Fuel economy, apart from engine design , relies on mahing the car as light as possible . This is why durability has been inversely impacted
Japanese manufacturers who manufacture in Japan still prioritise durability . Just ask your local independant repairer and you'll get honest/current
opinion; not a sales spruik.

True. Old German cars weren’t reliable. Now they are as good as Japs cars, service cost is going down a lot too. You can buy prepaid 3 yrs service plan for beemers for only $1700. Cheap.
New Toyota RAV4, Volvo & some Beemer models are using the same Japs made Aisin 8 speed transmission. It shifts as smooth as a silk.
