Mailchimp is fine for any sort of campaign. It's just a tool. Bit silly on the communications, but it's not the end of the world. It's a teaser, sure, but it's also an obvious and welcome strategy to get this into the hands. Again, advertising billboards and PR spots won't mean jack unless the app works. The best marketing they could possibly do is have the app do amazing things.
To put it another way, the product IS the marketing. Interesting to see what's next.
