I've no doubt the adults in the US will be pragmatic in that regard, but it doesnt change the rest of the strong-arming he's doing on other industries. Given we're a net importer of US products here in Australia and Trump's rhetoric around unfair to the US trade imbalances, I find his proposed tarrifs on Australia reprehensible.
With the nature of Trump's recent tarrifs on Vietnam and other nearby Asian nations, it'll be interesting to see how China will react. From what I can tell, Trump's actions are an existential economic threat to China. It will not go unnoticed.
Similar in the EU with divisions growing about where to focus trade, the protectionist US or, ironically, the more free market China. While people are free to contest the correctness of the contrast, those are the sort of conversations said to be taking place there.
