About 20 years ago I had occasion to work along side a virologist for several weeks who specialized in native Australian marsupials. It was a field science project for the NSW government and campfire talk often turned to his specialization. I still remember him saying back then that virus crossovers from animal the human were going to become a lot more prevalent in the future for a host of environmental reasons. He also mentioned that one of the biggest dangers to mankind was the risk of melting permafrost (this was before Global Warming became a big issue), and if that was ever to happen it would unlock ancient virus's and other pathogen's of which man had not seen before, and had no immunity to.

A lot of permafrost melting as we speak.
