Similar to determining if native title has been extinguished on many sites. This is an incredibly expensive and lengthy process that will potentially cost ratepayers millions and take years to progress. To achieve fair and just outcomes on these matters, it had been the approach of the Commonwealth Government for many years to provide financial support to both the Native Title claimants and the respondents. Regrettably, the Albanese Government has recently chosen to abolish the Native Title Respondent Funding Scheme (NTRFS).The Government has sought to justify this decision by claiming it was a budget repair measure. This is a weak excuse. In 2022/23 the Government allocated only $1.7 million in respondent funding across the country. In the same year the Queensland South Native Title Services Ltd was granted $25.8 million. In 2013, during Mark Dreyfus’ first innings as Attorney-General, Labor sought to reduce NTRFS funding. The Queensland Law Society described Labor’s cuts as “completely at odds with the public interest.” Ten years on, the Labor Government hasn’t just cut funding but abolished it all together. At a time when Australia is grappling with issues of indigenous recognition, it is crucial that the Government ensures a fair and just outcome for all parties involved in Native Title claims. Restoring this funding would be a positive step in that direction.
This doesn't fill anyone with confidence that the government is impartial and will benefit all Australians to have a Voice for aboriginals in the constitution. They are looking pretty lopsided IMO.
