volumes

Hi guys, can anyone explain to me what to look for in the volumes... I bought a small cap at a good price and it went up 20% but no buyer was willing to buy at that new price which made for a frustrating trading day. What sort of things are you looking at when looking at volumes, amount of buyers Vs sellers... to try to avoid this as well as predicting where the share price will go.

Just a basic and broad question :)
