I think Bond loaning his shares to shorters needs to be looked at again closely. I'm pretty sure none of them could forsee the oil price collapse though but in reality the oil business was not great even with oil at $100 a barrel.

Is it possible that the convertible bond holders may assume ownership of the assets as settlement of their debt now? Was this collapse designed?

Hi Zaba,
The bond holders can only convert to shares , the few remaining bond holders stuffed themselves and everyone else because they didn't , VA needed to happen for the few remaining bond holders to pull their heads in, as painful as it is for all holders, had to happen.
