The Snowy scheme did more than "just" build a system of dams and hydroelectric power stations.

It also fused a group of people from different backgrounds and many nations together into what became known as "new Australians". The pride and enthusiasm of those men for the project and Australia has never been matched since in a group that diverse in a non-war environment.

Friendships formed in those days still survive these days.

What Australia needs as a PM is not a dreamer who takes 10 billion dollars overseas or locks up funds in an airy fairy future fund, but a stark realist who lets the people fulfill their dreams, rather than fulfilling his own dream.

A pipeline would be a good start, followed by Menzies' plan to build 10 nuclear power stations across Australia.

But that is not going to happen. We will be stuck with mediocre leaders for a long time yet.
