I understand your thinking but if Santos, AGL, Origin, BG or EPW etc took over MEL are they going to consider looking after RD into their business plan? I don't think so. It will be secondary to their plans.
Maybe that is what concerns RD.
tbh, I do not see MEL being an independent commercial gas producer. They will be taken over or jv long before that.
RD will have to compete for their gas with everyone else.
