Today marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Pacific. A time for reflection for what could have been had our men and women in the services had not prevailed
My dad turned 18 in Nov 1943 and signed up the next week. No questions - its just what you did. He spent time in Borneo, Morotai etc just following the US troops in mopping up operations. No regrets on his part of course but enormous relief that if was over even though it took a year before he got home. I have enormous respect and gratitude for this generation of Australians and always will have.
I note the PM cant be bothered to go to the commemoration that is being held in Townsville today. He would be there in a heartbeat if Taylor Swift was playing.
"We're a country that says lest we forget. And lest we forget doesn't just mean that we got to get out there and have a funeral for our fallen once a year. It means lest we forget what they stood for and lest we forget that we all have a sacred civic duty to safeguard that inheritance of these freedoms and these rights for future generations."
