EPA Region 8 communities receive nearly $2.4 million in Brownfields grants

Denver -- As part of the Environmental Protection Agency's ongoing efforts to promote economic revitalization while safeguarding the environment and public health, the agency is awarding a record $75.4 million in Brownfields grants to communities nationwide. Eleven communities in Montana, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota will share a total grant amount of $2,377,538.

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. The uncertainties surrounding liability and cleanup costs can discourage investors and developers. The Brownfields program has revolutionized the way the federal government manages the process of prevention, assessment, cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated property.

By encouraging redevelopment of hundreds of thousands of America's abandoned and contaminated waste sites, EPA's Brownfields program has leveraged more than $5.8 billion in private investment, helped create more than 27,000 jobs and resulted in the assessment of more than 4,500 properties.

The EPA Region 8 states will receive a combination of assessment and cleanup grants. Assessment grants provide funding for grant recipients to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct planning and community involvement related to brownfield sites.

Eligible applicants may apply for up to $200,000 to assess a site contaminated by hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants (including hazardous substances co-mingled with petroleum) and up to $200,000 to address a site contaminated by petroleum.

Cleanup grants provide funding for a grant recipient to carry out cleanup activities at brownfield sites. Eligible applicants may apply for up to $200,000 per site.
