Profits in view, says Virotec

ENVIRONMENTAL technology group Virotec expects to post its first profit this financial year, according to company secretary Angus Craig, on the back of its HydroDec divestment and partnership agreements.

For the year ended June 30, 2004, Virotec posted a $15.4 million loss for the year, following on from a $7.28 million loss in 2002-03.

The Brisbane-based company, with a current market capitalisation of $93.6 million, sells a range of water, sewage and alumina treatment technologies, which Craig said would begin to deliver "tangible returns" in fiscal 2005.

Last month's $18 million HydroDec technology sale to British group Vert-Eco, which included a 65 million share package, 5% royalty payment and $1.26 million in cash, would also be a significant contributor to profitability.

"It's only three months into the year, but if you put two and two together it's reasonable to expect we should be profitable this year," Craig said.

"All the hard work that has been put in the past few years, we are really hoping to see the benefits in the coming year or so.

"We are pretty close to achieving some pretty good things."

Craig said over the next 12 months, Virotec would seek further commercialisation of its technology portfolio, which included an alumina treatment process, Basecon, water treatment technology, ViroSewage, and concrete strength enchancer, ViroConcrete.

"The way we envisage taking the technology forward is by using partners, by some sort of alliance, whether that be a licensing arrangement or a joint venture arrangement," he said.

"It reduces the risk and allows us to keep our overheads relatively low."
