MICRO DRILLING TURBINE IMPROVES GEOTHERMAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Fraunhofer scientists have developed an innovative tool that enables additional branch wells to be drilled from the main well. This reduces the risk of mis-drilling and improves the production rate.

Geothermal energy is an inexhaustible source of energy. Hot water can be found in reservoirs, fissures or cracks deep in the earth's crust, which is around 30 kilometers thick. Even at a depth of 5000 meters, the water has a temperature of up to 200 °C. In geothermal applications, it is pumped up through a production well . It can then, for example, drive steam turbines to generate electricity or be used to heat buildings via heat pump systems. The cooled water flows back into the earth's interior via a second borehole, the injection borehole, and is reheated in the hot rock. A closed cycle is created.
