Solid state batteries use Lithium so it's not a threat, more a way of encouraging more use of EV'S through likely being cheaper, give more range and faster charging but as you see in the article the JV is not just about solid state.
Toyota have been producing hybrid cars for years so will have a very good understanding of issues surrounding battery power...
They may be later to the party but know a lot about producing vehicles on mass and that's what's required in the future, the second mouse usually gets the cheese...
