I think the SP crash can be explained pretty easily. The lower the VWAP up until Thursday, the more shares and options will be allocated for those participating in the SPP. Options can be sold on market. Yes the timing and structure of the SPP can be debated, but it is what it is. Question is (if you believe the science will boost the SP eventually), do you buy on market or jump in with the SPP? I think the answer is pretty simple.
