With a playbook that reads 'we want cheap gas but we want someone else to build and develop the infrastructure’ the forgotten player here is Wesfarmers. They want access to cheap domestic gas to boost their downstream margins and have made that point very clear. They want the export ban to remain in place and they want onshore gas reserved for (their) domestic use. To even entertain the thought of a Rinehart or Ellison arrangement having a controlling interest in the onshore gas market is a serious problem for both Wesfarmers and the State Government because those very same domestic reserves may well cease to be available to the wider domestic market. For reasons as yet unclear the timing of the article in the Australian was perfect. My opinion only of course!
