Updated: 09:24, Thursday January 8, 2009 Unions representing mine workers in Western Australia are pushing for a 33 per cent pay rise for workers earning almost 100-thousand dollars a year.
In response Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard has urged unions to temper their demands for pay-rises to prevent job losses in a weakening economy.
The Mining Union says it will not be deterred from pushing for the 33 per cent increase for its workers.
The move for extra pay comes as steel company Alcoa is planning to slash more than 13 thousand jobs across its world-wide operations.
