My correction the Shark Safety Program has been in place for 52 years,

The SSP has been in place on Queensland beaches since 1962. It relies on nets, drum lines or a
combination of both to remove high risk sharks from a particular location.
In the 44 year history of the program, there has been one fatal attack on a beach with SSP
measures in place. That occurred at Amity on 7 January 2006
