Economist and climate change adviser Ross Garnaut believes WA is well placed to capitalise on the shift towards a low carbon world by investing in renewable technologies, but he says traditional energy companies have been slow to react to the changing landscape.

WA's centralised energy grid, which spans across a vast area of the state, also stands to benefit from renewables.
Maintaining the network's poles and wires in remote areas of the state for small amounts of people is a massive drain on Western Power's budget.
