Shorters are really not so different from holders selling to take profit at the top and buying back at the bottom The key difference is the higher risk and cost profile – stumping up a deposit, paying interest on the borrowed shares until they can return them, paying any dividends to the lender – all with no guarantee of achieving a profit to cover the cost.
I've never shorted. There are safer and lower cost ways to take a bearish position on a stock: sell if you hold, warrants and options if you don't.
But short action creates opportunities for all of us: to take profits and re-enter, to accumulate, somebody to loan out shares to.
