I think you are being way too pessimistic. Don't forget that the previous Coalition Government which had Green Party MP/Minister Eugenie Sage involved in the first application by OGC about Waihi and she voted it down. Then the application was submitted again via a slightly different process and she was sidelined and two Labour Ministers approved OGC's request. So I think the chance of providing additional jobs in the area as well as the economic boost to the area proved too strong an argument to allow the project to lapse.
