We briefly mentioned scandium recently and remarked on the progress of the miners, particularly those where the Sc is a by-product. OK that's nice but -

In the south of India is an Iron Ore deposit which contains a few % of scandium as an impurity - its not economic to mine and (from memory) the local iron workers would just go and dig a few barrows of it when they got an order for a sword, or two. They made the strongest toughest swords and were highly prized in the whole Middle East.

You are at a considerable advantage if your sword cuts the other blokes sword in half.

Of course they had no idea why - bit like us waiting.
