Going toe to toe with Mark Geyer doesn't say anything about Lewis' football ability.....just about his ability to bluff.
Lewis was a very good player, as was Andrew Johns, but neither of them was as good as the press and the system would have you believe. Neither possessed individual attacking brilliance which surely would be a prerequisite for a player claiming to be the greatest of all time.
Lewis and Johns (Johns in particular) were heavily promoted by the press. It became the thing to do. If Johns threw the fourth last pass before a try was scored, he was given the accolades......lol. It was a load of rubbish. He was a product of "the club" on Channel 9, including his grotty brother, who never stopped 'pushing' his case.
Lewis was similar to an extent.
One needs only to view the 'career' highlights of each of them, and there's hardly anything special to witness. Neither of them was capable of individual brilliance like a Bob Fulton, Billy Slater, Matt Bowen or Thurston. Neither of them possessed speed.
Johns was just pumped up by Channel 9 and the sheeple fell for it.
Both very good players, but don't for one moment discount the hype.
