In the iOS App Store, there are two types of submissions: a major, "new app" submission, which goes through the Apple legal team prior to approval. The second is an "app release" which is for subsequent releases of the product with bug fixes, new features etc.

The first release type is where WGL had issues prior, because WGL collect more data on customers than Apple permits as part of legislative requirement. Apple rejected this, and if you recall the back and forth WGL went through to prove to them that we were only doing so to meet Australian law... Was painful but the legal team at Apple finally approved.

Now the second release type is easier, it's a short approval process (24hrs) and doesn't require a full legal sweep. All of our subsequent releases have been of this type.

When it comes to changing the general metadata on an app, only the second type of release is required. But for a name change, you have to go through the first process all over again. That means once again a legal wrangle over Australian legislative data requirements vs Apple expected data requirements and the possibility of it going through a new legal team in the US and the likely potential delays as a result.

We have felt this too risky until recently.

Last week, Apple changed this stance. We can now change the app name without the first type of release process (and the risks involved). Therefore we just need to wait for the next release to add those (and other) ASO changes.

So effectively the next release may have a name change being approved which will coincide with the ASO marketing about to ramp up - No point ramping this up without the right name..!
