The other alternative is to simply buy the index. You can do this easily by buying STW. Someone mentioned BUY and HOLD "doesn't work in this day and age." That will probably ring true for the next 5-10 years as we suffer a protracted bear market due to the deleveraging needed because of the bubbles created in the recent bull market. However your son has 50+ years, so buy and hold will beat every strategy over that period.
