I can see where Adams is coming from, but with a little poetic licence, I will present this modern version:
"Our minds thus grow in spots; and like grease spots,the spots spread, absorbing splatter from life's experiences as they affect us.But we let them spread as little as possible: because when they meet, our minds will be clogged and unable to "see" the truths that are placed before us, or the falsehoods that cross our paths; we keep unaltered as much of our old knowledge, as many of our old prejudices and beliefs that we can, because they represent reality and a stable and familiar platform from which to explore life.
Without them,we would lose direction, and have nowhere to retreat to when we are lost, confused or betrayed by life's whims."
