Dili.... like you, I have no experience of warfare. from reading reports and first hand stories (heard, read and seen video reports) I do know that Guerrilla warfare has nothing to do with our Congo primates.
"How can the usual laws of war" is the reason the military have rules of engagement..... have you heard of this?
These define the methods that must be used to ensure that civilians are not harmed by military actions, among other important details.
This is why discipline is so important in the military training and in conflict engagements.
The Aus military are not sent in to kill randomly or capriciously.
