We simply have to industrialise if we want to remain a middle power , continue to provide a decent standard of living for all Aussies, roll in
hundreds of billions of trade surpluses and provide for our aging population.
IMO we are focused on China and the USA because we can do bugger all about them and that it is too challenging to divise & implement
strategies to counteract the negative effect that this economic war is having on our economy. Every time we mention Trump & China we should
be saying what we are going to do about rather than acting like footie spectators. We should be togged up and ready to run in and score Aussie goals!
We simply cant rely on multinationals to do that job for us . Just look at what the 4 foreign Auto manufacturers did and and what Alcan is planning to do.
If we were half bright we would have been making China pay for our industrialisation so that we are not reliant on China. Similarily we should be planning to invest the future proceeds of industrialising in setting up a proper defensive systems , developing a nuclear capability as a deterrent.
Just look at Israel. It has Nukes and the best that money can buy Patriot anti-missile defence systems and here we are like sitting ducks having
spent hundreds of billions and wasted hundreds of thousands of Aussie lives fighting US wars overseas. and to put the tin hat on it Uncle Sam
is putting the hard word on us: Either you are with us or you are against us.
Of course the question has to be asked: Would the USA allow us to develop our own defensive capabilities including a few dozen Nukes?
IMO, our greatest external threat is Indonesia that has 12 times our population , Muslim & an emerging economy which will likely pass us out in the next 5 years (It has already passed us out on a PPP adjusted basis.) And the Indonesian hawks are likely to remember the humiliation experienced by their armed forces when we forced them out of East Timor.
