I can think of quite a few why China does have the capacity to invade Australia. Military strategists have said the same. They have an enormous modern equipped military, while we have a small fleet of spent submarines with a new fleet not ready until the 2040's, a small air force, likewise at the beginning of being replaced, and a minuscule army compared to theirs. Then there is the fact of our enormous landmass to defend with our very limited capability.
For all the economic arguments suggested that will apparently provide reason for them not to take Australia, none have addressed the issue of what will happen when we do actually find ourselves on the receiving end of their aggression when they invade Taiwan, which is a given. We will be suddenly at at war then, and then Australia will suddenly be in more than knee deep. It will be our own Pearl Harbour moment.
All the economic and cold war theory doesn't provide an answer to the problem that we will be at war with China when they attempt to take back the 'renegade state.' We have naval craft in the area presently that along with the USA's Western Pacific Battle Group, are supposedly a deterrent for them attempting this objective. The day of reckoning though is moving closer.
Yes, they may fail, but they may win too. And then what? That is the question!
Let's just hope that the US will remain in a strong position to prevent the above from occurring, but there is no guarantee of that either. As such, we will find ourselves at war with a massive nation on our near doorstep that has significant interests in our country, and a belief that they have the right to secure them. After all, when we are at war, our enemy loses those economic rights, but that is from our perspective. I think though though that the CPP will maintain a different view.
Who is going to stop them? Our football teams?
