'Who cares?': Kyle and Jackie O defend Intern Pete
    By Broede Carmody

    3 April 2018 — 10:30am
Kyle Sandilands has defended a team member's tone-deaf cricket stunt despite fierce backlash from the sporting community and fellow broadcasters.
Peter Deppeler – otherwise known as "Intern Pete" – interrupted Steve Smith's emotional press conference last week. He said the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket was nothing compared to "what Davina and Dean did on Married at First Sight".

'Intern Pete' throws an "ill-judged" googly at Steve Smith's emotional press conference, Karl Stefanovic unleashes on cricket boss James Sutherland and Jon Faine's "inappropriate" interview.
On Tuesday morning's show, Sandilands' co-host Jackie O told listeners she had no idea that Deppeler planned to attend the Cricket Australia press conference. She also admitted she hadn't watched the controversial stunt, which was plastered over social media to howls of outrage.
"I woke up to the news," she said. "I didn't even know what was going on until the next day. I'm cringing. I can't bring myself to watch it. I get where people are coming from. He made a mistake."
However Sandilands defended Deppeler's actions, labelling those offended by the intrusion "loons".

"Who cares?" he said. "It's a cricket game at the end of the day. People have threatened Intern Pete... these [people] are loons."

The acid-tongued radio personality then criticised Cricket Australia's decision to remove advertising from KIIS FM's parent company ARN.
"We'll decide whether he [Intern Pete] stays or goes, certainly not Cricket Australia," he said. "Oh, my heart bleeds. What'd we play, two ads?"

Deppeler fronted listeners this morning to say he was invited to ask a question and, since then, has received death threats.
"I would like to apologise to Steve," he said. "I do feel for the guy and I think my timing definitely wasn't right. I am truly sorry to Steve."
An ARN spokeswoman previously told Fairfax Media that Intern Pete had tried to "inject some warmth" into a solemn press conference.
