Your hope that the US will support us in a crunch is wishful and utopian.I say this with due respect to the tune of the song: "It aint necessarilly soo.." It would be nice if we could count on it, but we cant!
Sure, "Australia is America's best friend" says John Howard. Is Australia America's best friend? Not if it doesnt suit America financially. Look at history: During the Timor crisis Australia faced a direct confrontation with Indonesia. Did America rush to our side? NO!.Tony Blair did, America did zilch because they did not wish to upset the Indos. America supported Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran. America made Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban and trained and financed and backed them against Russia in Afghanistan. Now Russia is a friend of the US and the above 2 are deadly enemies. Russia puts $40bill. into Iraq recently and warns the US against attacking. A month later Putin is prepared to support Bush AGAINST Saddam in the return for the payment of $9bill. and the US support to zap Chechnya without UN approval.
The US does nothing without the agenda of the mighty dollar or its own security.If they stood to gain more from the Indos, they would happily help Indonesia occupy Australia.No sentiment or loyalty there, and with friends like that we dont need enemies. The only country we can REALLY rely on is Britain. Any pacts with the US are meaningless.
