On the morning of the AGM, IG would know how many votes he was going to be able to cast as chairman.
Perhaps he chose that moment to visit JT and give him an indication of how he was planning to cast those votes in the CEO re-election ballot.
It's tough for JT, but at least he was given the chance to go gracefully rather than get ambushed at the AGM with everyone watching.
All speculation, of course.
